5 Steps to Show You How to Start an Online Bakery Shop

Step 1: Define Your Niche

Identify your specialty. Are you focusing on artisan bread, cakes, pastries, or a mix? Knowing your niche helps in crafting a unique selling proposition. You may read Step 2 while you are doing this.

Most online bakery store owner will choose one type of bread to become their main product and only this one. Like toast, bagel, macaron, tiramisu, or even pudding.

Choose one thing that you may not like, but you are good at making it.

Also, make sure it won’t cost you too much effort and time while you are choosing.

The simpler one you pick, the more change you can make afterward.

For example, if you pick a toast as your main menu, you can change the taste, model, or package in the future. When it comes to selling, you can choose whether you are going to sell a whole bar of toast or a single slice pack. It may also change the way you ship your goods.

Step 2: Develop a Business Plan

Outline your business structure, target market, pricing, and financial projections. A solid plan will guide your decisions and attract potential investors and customers.

Actually, this section is as important as Step 1, you may do both at the same time to make sure you don’t strayed too far off the route.

Planning is always a boring thing to do. Thinking, writing, erasing, again and again. Maybe a great idea pops into your head, but you don’t have the resources to make it happen at that time, so you will have to give up on that “genius idea”. That’s painful, but you have to face it. What I would like to do is to write this idea down on my note, no matter if it’s a notebook, memo, or phone. It may turn into other inspirations one day, or it may bring you some new idea or a better one. No one knows when the muse smiles.

Back to the topic, how to write a business plan? Don’t treat it as a serious document or anything else. It just a memo which can help you be clear what you are going to do.

The only things you need to write is-

  1. The product, main menu you have determined at Step 1. Detail them in this step, how many flavors you are going to sell (It may be a good idea to sell only one flavor if you are a beginner), how many costs (Calculate the price and time) for making each items. Searching the internet such as Facebook and Instagram, most of your competitor are selling on those platforms. Find out some of them who are just started for more than 3 months and the selling model is similar as you are expected. You can decide the initial position by referring to their marketing methods and pricing.
  2. Bakery concept, having an engaging story will make people to remember your brand easier. This determines your future marketing and photo style, whether you go for health and wellness, cute and eye-catching, or simplicity above all else, those will affect your sales and buyers. So be very careful when deciding on this part, as it will not be easy to change it until later.
  3. Target market, an important part. You won’t sell elementary school students bread with alcohol in it since this might break your bank. Be sure who you are going to sell, gender, age, career, and family, the more detail you have written down, the more clear you can realize who will say “Shut Up and Take My Money!”
  4. Unique selling proposition, it may related to the use of premium ingredients, a special baking technique, or any other element that distinguishes the bakery from others. It’s time to write a story by yourself. In many cases, you can easily write it down once you have found the concept of your bakery.

Step 3: Legalities and Permits

Ensure you comply with local regulations. Register your business, obtain necessary licenses, and check health and safety requirements.

This step may be different due to your location, check with local health departments to understand hygiene and safety standards. Additionally, consider liability insurance to protect your business. Being legally sound not only establishes trust with customers but also prevents potential legal issues down the line, ensuring a solid foundation for your online bakery business.

Step 4: Source Quality Ingredients and Supplies

Establish relationships with reliable suppliers for fresh, quality ingredients and packaging. Consistency in your products is crucial for customer satisfaction.

Whether you are going to produce breads and desserts yourself, or importing from other suppliers, make sure the stable quality. No one will like to received a bread baked golden brown today but buy it burnt black the next day. This can dramatically affect repeat rates and customers’ willingness to buy.

Packaging is not the most important thing in the planning part. Keep it simple but cleaning, a plastic or paper bag, better with self-adhesive feature. And a card with your brand name, contact info, social account, and a thank-you note. It can be changed all the time if your business become profitable.

Step 5: Set Up Your Online Store

Choose an e-commerce platform (like Shopify or WooCommerce), create an easy-to-navigate website, and ensure a secure payment gateway. Include high-quality images of your products.

It is easy for everyone to set up a website nowadays; you can build a site without programming skill. Even the web design, you can use AI tool to generate designs or simply choose from the free themes if you opt for WordPress to build your website.

Nothing is going to be complicated here. Remember, keep everything simple if you are a beginner. This can apply to any situation. People may get confused easily by too many choices, so realize what you should do and notice what is necessary for you.

After you set up your online store, you have to promote your product. There are various ways for you to do this: Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok, Etsy or Ebay. Different people have different tastes, so identify which platforms your target customers are active on, and advertise on those platforms.
